ADVENT: KEEP BURNING THE INCENSE

What is the longest you’ve ever prayed for something before God answered your prayer?  When year after year goes by and it doesn’t seem like God is moving, at what point should we stop praying?  I’d say if our prayers are in agreement with the Word of God and we are pursuing the will of God, then we should never stop praying.  You may ask, “What if it takes years and it seems like time is running out on the possibility of an answer?”  So what?  Is anything too hard for God?  Is God limited by time or distance?

Givers and Takers

There will always be people who criticize our worship, our giving of time for Sunday School, Sunday worship, or Bible study on Wednesday nights.  Some will say that our giving in tithes and offerings is a waste and that all the church wants is your money.  The takers are always calculating, always thinking about what they can get rather than what they can give in worshipping and in service to the Lord.

THIS IS MY VICTORY SONG!

Our victory is not dependent upon elections or economic conditions. Pandemic or no pandemic, I’m still singing my victory song because an old rugged cross was lifted up against the backdrop of the Jerusalem sky, and with His last breath Jesus declared, “It is finished!” The war has already been won, and this is my victory song!

Looking Up to Look Ahead

I think that for a number of reasons, this past year has been like that for many people. Between the COVID-19 pandemic, the non-stop negative news on the media featuring abuse, bombings, and burning cities, along with a culture determined to divide and conquer the community of faith, this has been a very difficult year. But like David in Psalm 138 we can keep singing.

Pause for a Praise

John is very clear about his motives. Eight times in this epistle John says “I write” or “I have written.” For example, in chapter 2 verse 1, he says, “My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” In chapter 5 verse 13, he says, “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” In our text, four times he says, “I write to you … because” and two more times he says, “I have written to you … because.”
